Do Accountants charge for advice?

This is a question that we get asked a lot! And the simple answer is that it depends on the complexity of your query.

If, for example, you have a simple question about your payroll, then chances are that your accountant will not charge for their advice. However, if answering your question takes more than a few minutes or requires your accountant to look into an issue in more depth, then you should expect to be billed.

Whether or not your accountant charges for advice may also depend on whether you pay your accountant a regular fixed fee, an hourly rate or per service. Many businesses prefer to pay their accountant a fixed monthly fee to avoid unexpected bills. However, if you require minimal support, you may prefer to pay by the hour or per service.

Types of advice accountants provide

– Basic Accounting Services: this includes payroll, VAT returns, self-assessment tax returns, sole trader accounts and basic compliance.

– Tax Planning.

– Business Planning: including budgeting, financial planning and succession planning.

– Specialist Accounting Services: such as financial audits, inheritance tax and business valuations.

How accountants charge

– Hourly Rate:  your accountant will charge you on an agreed hourly rate for their time.

– Per Service:  your accountant will charge you an agreed price for a specific service.

– Regular Fixed Fee: if you require regular ongoing advice or services, a regular fixed fee may be a good option.

If you’re unsure whether or not your accountant will charge for their advice, it’s perfectly reasonable to ask.
